ST JOHN OF GOD COLLEGE OF HEALTH (DUAYAW NKWANTA)
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
· St John of God Hospital Duayaw – Nkwanta is noted for its specialization in Orthopedics, Prosthetics, Orthotics and Physiotherapy among others. By these specialized areas, the hospital
takes delivery of many referral cases from all over Ghana and the neighbouring countries.
· Due to the numerous referral cases, the hospital realized the need to train staff from sister hospitals in basic principles in Physiotherapy.
· Management then started a six (6) months physiotherapy programme for staff of other sister hospitals to help prevent disabilities mostly caused by Buruli ulcer.
· At the pilot stage, thirty – one (31) workers from various health institutions were trained.
· Due to the uniqueness of the programme, in September, 2009, the Ministry of Health (MOH) gave approval to start the programme on a national basis with ‘Physiotherapy Assistant and Orthotics Training School’ as the name.
· The school commenced with thirty seven (37) students in November, 2009 with Rev. Sr. Comfort Michelle Apedze, then Administrator, St. John of God Hospital, as the acting Principal.
· She acted for three years and in March, 2012, Mad. Margaret Acquaah who was a Principal Physiotherapist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital was appointed as the Principal for the school and in 2014, she also left and management of the school appointed Mr. Fredrick Inkum Danquah as the acting Principal and made him the substantive principal in April, 2015.
· In 2013, in the school had approval from the ministry of Health to start a three year DIPLOMA in physiotherapy Technology and the first batch of Diploma Students completed in the year 2016.
· In August 2014. The school entered into academic collaboration with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
· The School has so far trained two hundred and five (205) students in four different batches all of whom are working in various health institutions across the country.
The school was formerly known as Physiotherapy and Orthotics training school but was changed to St John of God College of Health.
